Epistaxis is defined as acute bleeding from the nostril, nasal cavity or nasopharynx. It is generally a benign condition but can cause significant anxiety. Most everyone from time to time may experience a nose bleed (Epistaxis). The tiny vessels in the nose are very fragile and therefore easy to break and cause bleeding. While in nursing school I learned that the nausea comes from the stomach not being able to digest the blood. And you never ever tilt your head all the way back. The patient had experienced nose bleeds most of their life, but the last few weeks it had gotten worse.
The blood was pouring out, saturating towels and making it almost difficult for the patient to breath. Anything that catches us unawares can be a little disconcerting, and one such occurrence is the sudden nose bleeds that most people experience at some time or other. The rush of blood from the nose can be quite alarming and if it takes place whilst in public, it can be a little embarrassing. If the nose bleeds are occurring recurrently then there may well be a medical problem connected to a previous injury, such as a blow to the head or face, which although by appearance may have cleared, it could have left something else hidden from view.
Nosebleeds are not pleasant unless you are a Nosferatau, one of his victims or at least a bedbug. The pain in bleeding in the nose may not be much in most cases but you will look an eyesore and may set off some alarmist reaction from others. Extreme heat sometimes causes nose bleeding. While it is not possible to move about only where there is air conditioning or practical to carry an air conditioner on your back, you may keep the fact that extreme heat is an agent of nose bleeding and not be too alarmed about it. Nosebleeds occur most commonly in children under the age of 10 and in adults between the ages of 45-65. The incidence is higher in men but after menopause, there is little difference in the incidence between men and women. Estrogen is felt to confer a protective benefit to women either because it helps keep mucosa moist or because of the vascular benefits.
This is usually associated with nose picking (hence the prevalence in children) but there are other causes of trauma. Since the lining on the inside of the nose is rich in blood vessels, any slight trauma can trigger a nose bleed. A trial of oxymetazoline (Afrin) or phenylephrine (Neo-Synephrine), potent vasoconstrictors, may stop the bleeding. Only use as instructed on the label. It is important to point out that leukaemias should be given due consideration and all efforts must be made to treat and control the condition.
Recovery in the case of leukaemia, whether acute or chronic, depends on the age of the patient, and on the type/ variety of the leukaemia diagnosed finally. There should be no unnecessary panic when the possibility of leukaemia is being considered. Many cases go well with their disease for several years before they begin to show. However, it is very important to mention that a very scientific approach is required for the treatment of such cases. The patient needs the thorough guidance of the physician in respect of diet, exertion, stress, etc.
